NEED SOME ADVICE ON PROGRAMING DRUMS

Postby growinup01 on Mon Feb 08, 2010 9:47 pm

my question is how do u for example change the tempo of a particular section of your drum pattern lets say u wanted for example ur kick drum or cymbal to speed up to 16th notes for a couple bars without the tempo of the rest of the track changing just that particular part of the pattern?

In all seriousness your question doesn't really make since because there is a difference between tempo (speed) and subdivision of the pulse at a particular tempo...Your question kind of blurs them. That being said, if you're asking if you can have your bass drum at a different tempo than the rest of your kit then that's a no go. Now, that being said, you can create the illusion that your bass drum is slightly faster than the rest of your kit by consistently programming it a bit ahead of the beat (pulse).

have a good one

16ths naturally sounds "faster" than 8ths or quarter notes. I've experienced this myself. the same piece at the same tempo with 16ths feels more up than 8ths. I don't believe adjusting the tempo itself is what your after, rather a good way to transition to 16ths from a perceived slower cadence.

This isn't a technical issue its a creative one.

It's also a technical issue, as there will be a bigger gap between non-16th notes and 16th notes once you make a certain part swing more than the part before that. In other words, you'll also have to time such transition properly.

But... most of the time certain combinations work fine, like 16th note hi-hats with a swing and quarter note snares. When you change synth melodies from swinging to non-swinging, you will notice that a lot. And indeed it might feel faster or slower, but the tempo obviously doesn't really change. :)

Holy isssh! He's good alright, nice video on there.
